Erika Lust is a filmmaker who promotes and practices feminist porn. She hopes that the gaze of the dominating consumers which are men would allow women to embrace their sexuality and understand it that would then empower adult entertainment.
The way Lust works
Lust’s first adult film titled The Good Girl was awarded first prize at the International Erotic Film Festival Barcelona. It was uploaded online for free and downloaded more than 2 million times. In each of her production which is tasked with creating a good working environment, she also makes sure that everyone involved is paid fairly. Lust emphasizes on the development of an engaging storyline that the viewers can enjoy and shooting from a female perspective, she presents scenes that depict female pleasure. Lust’s films avoid those depicting simulated abuse or other more disturbing scenes.
She said, “I don’t just direct adult films for women, I direct adult films for people who don’t think that sex always has to be presented as cheap, tasteless and vulgar. I show sex as fun and full of passion, but I also pay attention to context, details, location, styling – everything that you would pay attention to in a film without explicit sex. To me, that adds to the feeling of eroticism and excitement. If you can answer the question “why are these people having sex?” in a captivating way, it makes the whole thing more fun. [It should] also involve real pleasure, not loud faked orgasms on a depressing couch.”
The feminist filmmaker creates relatable films which earn positive comments from both genders. And sometimes in some of her films, she adds in comedy to make it more authentic and real.
Feminist porn is just another way of presenting adult content. There are a number of upcoming directors with wider range of taste that could satisfy people who are bored with mainstream adult films. And with how millennials are too open with talking about sex and sexuality, the challenge is helping them explore it.
